Comparison of direct and indirect immunofluorescence staining of clinical specimens for detection of respiratory syncytial virus antigen.

Immunofluorescence staining methods for respiratory syncytial virus antigen detection were compared. Of 50 specimens originally positive for respiratory syncytial virus by direct immunofluorescence and culture, 49 were positive by repeat direct immunofluorescence and 32 were positive by indirect immunofluorescence. Additional results obtained on specimens originally negative for respiratory syn...

Rapid detection of respiratory syncytial virus by indirect immunofluorescence in infants hospitalized with acute respiratory disease.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is well recognized as the single most important pathogen accounting for acute viral infections of lower respiratory tract in infants and young children. Outbreaks of RSV infections occur each year in winter and early spring (L Pednealut et al. 1994 J Clin Microbiol 32: 2861-2864). In Cuba, acute respiratory diseases (ARD) constitute a major problem of health, a...

Immunofluorescence Method for The Detection of Non-Pathogenic Influenza Virus

The direct F.A. Method has been used for differentiation of virulent and avirulent lines of influenza viruses. A positive fluorescence was obtained indicating the level of virus in the tissues, sorbing with dried mouse powder helped to reduce non-specific staining. The virulent line showed the greatest number of fluorescent cells with the peak at 10 hours. the non-virulent lines showed a gra...

Comparison of virus culturing and immunofluorescence for rapid detection of respiratory syncytial virus in nasopharyngeal secretions: sensitivity and specificity.

I compared the fluorescent antibody test for respiratory syncytial virus in nasal secretions to virus cultures (N = 310). The sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value (+) were 95.1%, 86.5%, and 88.5%, respectively.
